There are two types of receptions on fat cells that control the movement of fat into and out of fat cells - the alpha receptors and the beta receptors.

- Alpha receptors support the entry of fat into fat cells, causing the cells to enlarge.
- Beta receptors promaote the exist of fat out of fat cells, causing the cells to shrink.

The number of alpha and beta receptors is generally equal above the waist. In women, however, there are eight times more alpha receptors than beta receptors below the waist, causing fat to be stored more readily on the abdomen, buttocks and thighs.
